Install Safepay Checkout Onsite on Shopify

Accept card payments directly on your Shopify checkout page, with no redirects.

The Safepay Checkout Onsite app embeds card payments inside your Shopify checkout. Customers enter their card details on your checkout page and never leave your store. You can also issue full or partial refunds from your Shopify admin, and every order stays in sync with your Safepay dashboard.

The app costs $11.99/month after a 7-day free trial, billed by Shopify. Safepay transaction fees apply separately. See pricing.

Before you start

You need:

  • A Shopify store, and permission to install apps on it.
  • A Safepay sandbox account for testing, and a production account for live payments.
  • The Public API Key and Private API Secret Key for both accounts. See Find your API keys.

Shopify allows only one onsite card payment provider per store. Uninstall any other onsite card app (for example Shopify Payments or Stripe) before installing Safepay Checkout Onsite. Other payment methods, such as Safepay Checkout Raast, can stay installed.

1

Install the app

  1. Open Safepay Checkout Onsite on the Shopify App Store.
  2. Click Install and select your store. If prompted, choose the Install payment provider option.
  3. You're redirected to your Shopify admin. Confirm the installation.
  4. Approve the subscription charge. You won't be billed until the 7-day trial ends.
  5. To cancel the subscription, you have to uninstall the app.
Click Install on the Shopify App Store listing.
Click Approve to start your 7-day free trial. Shopify bills $11.99 USD every 30 days after it ends.

2

Add your API keys

First, copy your keys from the Safepay dashboard. Log in to the sandbox dashboard, click Developer in the top right, then open API. Use the copy icon next to each key. Then do the same in the production dashboard.

Developer → API in the Safepay dashboard. Your keys are shown in full in your own dashboard.

Next, paste them into the Get started with Safepay page that opens in Shopify after installation:

The Safepay Checkout Onsite configuration page in Shopify. Fill in all four fields, then click Submit.

Click Submit, then Activate. Safepay now appears at checkout as Credit Card and is ready to accept payments.

Never share your Secret Key publicly, including in support chats or screenshots.

3

Set up Shopify checkout

For Safepay to receive complete order details, go to Settings → Checkout in your Shopify admin and set:

  • Customer contact method: Email
  • Full name: Require first and last name
  • Shipping address phone number: Required

4

Test a payment

Test mode is on by default after installation. In test mode, payments go through the Safepay sandbox and no real money moves.

  1. Add a product to your cart and go to checkout.
  2. Safepay appears as Credit Card. Enter a test card and place the order.
  3. In your Shopify admin, open the order. Test orders show a yellow notice at the top.
  4. Find the payment in your sandbox dashboard.

Treat any order placed in test mode as a test order. Don't fulfill it.

5

Go live

Once your production account is approved, turn test mode off in the app settings. Payments now go through your production account and appear in your production dashboard.

Match Shopify orders to Safepay payments

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the order.
  2. In the Timeline, click the Safepay entry to expand the payment details.
  3. Copy the payment reference and search for it under Payment ID in your Safepay dashboard.

Test payments are in the sandbox dashboard, and live payments are in the production dashboard.

Issue a refund

  1. In your Shopify admin, open the order and click Refund.
  2. Enter the amount and a reason. You can refund the full amount or part of it, up to the amount still available to refund.
  3. Confirm the refund.

The refund is sent to Safepay automatically. In your Safepay dashboard, the original payment updates to show a full or partial refund.
